-I sold a car the other day. Until that day, the car was in good shape as far as I know. A friend of mine drove for a week before and he felt it was good car as well.
After I sold the car, the guy kept calling me saying something's wrong this and that which I don't understand. First he found out shock is bad I told him to go to a mechanic and get me an estimate and I was willing to work out if that was really true. It turned out it was okay but bushing was worn out. The cost of bushing was about $150 and he said he would just fix it. . This guy still calls me about this and that even after that. I am about to block his number. I sold this 12 year old car with 160K miles failry cheap. About 1000 lower than howt other sells this car, I have no idea what this guy wants from the old car. It's 2000 camry.
My questions are: I didn't go to tax office with him to transfer the title as he refused to go. He said he wouldn't have time for that day and he will transfer later. I did have Bill of Sale signed and I sent transfer notication to Austin, TX. I found out this guy is in fact sells cars to priviate for a job and he paid me in cash
Is there anything I need to worry about?. I won't answer this guy's call any longer. Have I completed the transaction legally?I suggest you contact the tax office and file a complaint against him for not transferring the title. Until the title is formally transferred, you are the legal owner.
I'm in the UK, where the law may be slightly different, but here's my take:
The legal rule that mostly applies is "caveat emptor" - buyer beware.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Caveat_empt鈥?/a>
It is the buyer's responsibility to check out that the car is suitable and in good order. He should have it checked out by a qualified mechanic if he is unsure how to check it himself.
The seller should be honest, and should not withhold any knowledge of defects, otherwise the buyer could have a legal case against him. However in practice it is difficult to prove that a seller knowingly withheld information.
I am unsure as to the way you transfer legal ownership of a vehicle in the US, but you should always make sure this is done properly. In the UK it can be done by post, and you will need to get the new owner to sign the relevant licence document. Always give a receipt and keep a copy. Keep a copy of the signed vehicle licence document to prove that it was sold when you say it was.
Hope this helps.
